Boil Water Advisory remains following large Jefferson County water main break


Birmingham Water Works fixed a large main break Friday evening that impacted more than 10,000 people in northwest Jefferson County.The break happened at the western filter plant in Birmingham’s Pratt City area.It caused outages and affected water pressure in Adamsville, Brookside, Forestdale, Fultondale, Graysville, Minor and West Jefferson, according to BWW. The system will be flushed overnight and into Saturday morning.A Boil Water Alert will continue at least through Monday, according to BWW.The list of areas they said are affected include in and around:ForestdaleSanduskyPratt CityLewisburgCoalburgMineral SpringsPinkney CityHayes HighlandGreenleas HeightsSmithfield Estates,Zion HeightsWestwoodUnion GroveHillviewAdamsvilleFultondaleUS Highway 78Cherry AvenueTomahawk DriveThe list also includes streets adjacent to these areas:Pratt HighwayDugan HighwayHibernian StreetCoalburg RoadHeflin AvenueWalker Chapel RoadBrookside Coalburg Road During the boil water alert, the board is asking customers to bring water to a rolling boil for at least three minutes and let it cool before using, or use bottled water instead.The outage affected a number of schools in those areas.South Hampton K-8 School closed because of the water issue, according to Birmingham City Schools. Buses took students to regular stops, and families of car riders were asked to pick up their children as soon as possible.
