May 6 (Reuters) –The Perth Mint’s gold product sales in April jumped two-fold, while silver sales fell to their lowest level since December, the refiner said on Monday.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
The Perth Mint, owned by the government of Western Australia, is the world’s largest producer of newly mined gold.
Its intake each year equates to almost 75% of newly mined gold in Australia, one of the world’s biggest gold producers.
BY THE NUMBERS
Sales of gold coins and minted bars in April 2024 rose 103% on a monthly basis to 33,387 ounces. But they were down by more than 55% compared with the same period last year.
Sales of silver products last month stood at 684,735 ounces, down 20.4% on a monthly basis and nearly 65% lower year-on-year.
KEY QUOTE(S)
“The launch of our 2024 125th Anniversary coin collection helped drive demand in April, but the gold picture generally was more positive through the month, especially the Australian market,” said Neil Vance, The Perth Mint’s general manager of minted products.
CONTEXT
Spot gold XAU= prices hit an all-time high of $2,431.29 in April and registered a third straight monthly gain as geopolitical risks and central bank demand lifted bullion’s appeal. GOL/
