THE BEST WARRIORS. IT’S 837 NOW AND RIGHT NOW AFTER SOME WEATHER DELAYS, THE DOWNTOWN DES MOINES FARMERS MARKET IS OFFICIALLY OPEN. KCCI’S AMANDA ROOKER IS LIVE THERE FOR US THIS MORNING. AND AMANDA, WE HEARD THE OPENING BELL JUST NOW. HOW IS THE CROWD NOW WITH THE RAIN MOVING ON OUT? OH, NICOLE, YOU CAN JUST FEEL THE ENERGY HERE. THIS IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE DOWNTOWN DES MOINES FARMERS MARKET. AND THE CROWDS ARE HERE. THE LIVE MUSIC HAS STARTED. VENDORS ARE OPEN. WE HAD THAT AWESOME BELL RINGING TO KICK IT ALL OFF AND PEOPLE ARE SO EXCITED. I’LL STEP OUT SO YOU CAN GET A CLOSER LOOK. I MEAN, JUST A FEW HOURS AGO WE HAD HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS AND ALREADY WE’RE SEEING TONS OF CROWDS. UMBRELLAS ARE AWAY, PEOPLE ARE OUT AND ABOUT AND ENJOYING ALL THAT. THE MARKET HAS TO OFFER. AND I ACTUALLY WANT TO BRING IN NOW. ELIZABETH WIRE. SHE IS THE MANAGER OF THE DOWNTOWN FARMER’S MARKET, SO OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF A SOGGY START THIS MORNING. HOW DID YOU GUYS ADAPT? YES, DEFINITELY A SOGGY START. NOBODY WANTS RAIN AT ALL. BUT IF WE HAVE TO HAVE SOME RAIN, WE’RE LUCKY THAT WE GET TO OPEN ANYWAY. SO WE ADAPTED. WE WERE WATCHING THE LIGHTNING MAKING SURE THAT THE VENDORS WERE SAFE AND JUST KIND OF PLAYING IT BY EAR UNTIL WE HAD OUR BELL RINGING. AND OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE ALREADY LOTS OF PEOPLE HERE, YOU KNOW, WHAT IS THE MARKET MEAN TO THIS COMMUNITY? THE MARKET IS MORE THAN JUST A LOCAL FARMER’S MARKET. IT’S MORE THAN JUST AN EVENT. IT’S AN EXPERIENCE. AND IT REALLY MEANS A LOT TO THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE IT’S AN EXPERIENCE THAT PEOPLE CAN COME DOWN WITH THEIR FAMILIES. BUT IT ALSO MEANS A LOT FOR THE LOCAL BUSINESSES AND FARMERS THAT WE HAVE AT OUR MARKET. UM, IT IS A STAPLE IN THE DES MOINES COMMUNITY, AND IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE MIDWEST. Despite the soupy start, plenty of people still showed up to check out local products from more than 300 vendors

Thunderstorms Saturday morning delayed the opening of downtown Des Moines’ first farmers’ market of the season.The market was supposed to start at 7 a.m., but organizers delayed opening until 8:30 a.m.”We adapted, we were watching the lightning, making sure the vendors are safe and just kind of playing it safe until we had our bell ringing,” said Elizabeth Weyers, a downtown market manager.Despite the soupy start, plenty of people still showed up to check out local products from more than 300 vendors, including 12 new businesses along Water Street this year. “It really means a lot to the community because it’s an experience people can come down with their families, but it also means a lot for the local businesses and farmers that we have at our market. It’s a staple in the Des Moines community, and it’s one of the largest in the Midwest, and we’re really proud of it,” Weyers said. The market will be open every Saturday, May through October, from 7 a.m. to noon.
