MoDOT leader wants changes after seeing haulers spill trash on highway


A top leader with the Missouri Department of Transportation in Kansas City is calling on commercial trash haulers to make changes after he personally observed trash blowing from two separate trucks last month.Chris Redline, District Engineer for MoDOT Kansas City, wrote Waste Management a letter on Thursday. Read the full letter here.Redline saw the company’s trucks on April 10 and April 30 with trash blowing out onto the interstate.“Based on our observations, we believe a large percentage of trash along the highways comes from commercial haulers with unsecure loads,” he told Waste Management’s manager of Community Relations, Jonathan Stepp. “I respectfully request you work with your team to ensure all loads are properly secured to keep Missouri beautiful.”Redline has seen KMBC 9’s recent Dirty Kansas City investigation, which shows multiple trash haulers spilling their loads onto Kansas City area interstates.Redline cc’d KMBC on his letter, along with Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A Captain Steve Wilhoit and MoDOT spokeswoman Melissa Black.“I know you’re interested in reporting on this, so I thought you’d be interested in what I’ve been seeing myself,” he said.KMBC 9 Investigates reached out to Stepp and Waste Management on Thursday.Stepp emailed a statement saying the company is aware of sensitivity to litter on roadways.
