Indiana Michigan Power ready for power outages during the eclipse

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Indiana Michigan Power is sharing with its customers how the power company is preparing for Monday, April 8th’s eclipse. Areas will see total darkness for about 4 minutes during the eclipse, between 3:07-3:11 p.m.

I&M said it is preparing for the eclipse in the following ways:

  • Strategically Placed Crews and Adjusted Work Shifts: Crews will not be working in populated areas and will be performing work at or near the service centers throughout the morning hours. Designated crews from each district will work a modified shift from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. to cover the time of the event and when visitors depart from viewing areas.
  • Adjusted Work Assignments for Business Partners: In the areas impacted by totality, our business partners will be working alternative days or have been reassigned to work outside the high-traffic areas with the highest number of visitors.
  • Connected with Community Partners: We will remain in close communication with local Emergency Management Agencies and law enforcement in advance of the event. This includes monitoring traffic patterns and requesting law enforcement escorts, if needed, to access our equipment during any outages.
  • Ensured Outage Restoration is Completed Safely and As Quick as Possible: With the expected increase in traffic, our crews are prepared to work outages as they relate to vehicle accidents with poles or other I&M equipment.

I&M is also making sure it focuses on safety during the eclipse. That includes the public and its employees. I&M expects heavy traffic due to a surge in visitors. There may be an increase in crashes which can cause power outages across its service areas, according to I&M.

I&M is encouraging drivers to eliminate distractions while driving, like texting, making calls, setting navigation systems or adjusting the radio. Remember, Indiana is a hands-free state and it’s illegal to text and drive. I&M also wants drivers to be alert to its crews and other first responders. Along with avoiding traveling during the eclipse, I&M is encouraging you to fill up on gas and food sooner rather than later.
