Card skimmers found at 11 Big Y grocery stores in Massachusetts


Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Big Y said credit/debit card skimmers were discovered at 11 of its stores and that at least 10 of those devices were installed just days before Christmas.Big Y announced Friday that the company experienced a string of incidents between Dec. 19-21, 2023, when a person inserted a skimming device on a single terminal at each of the following Big Y stores in Massachusetts:The Springfield location on St. James AvenueThe Springfield location on Cooley StreetThe Chicopee express location on Granby RoadThe Northampton location off Route 5The Ware location on West StreetThe Southbridge location on East Main StreetThe Worcester location on Mayfield StreetThe Milford location on Medway RoadThe Wilbraham express location on Boston RoadThe Ludlow location on Center StreetIn addition, Big Y said that a skimming device was inserted on a single terminal at its Westfield location on East Silver Street between Dec. 19, 2023, and Jan. 12, 2024.”We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we notified and are working with law enforcement. We have inspected all of our terminals, and continue to do so,” reads a statement from Big Y. “If we learn that any particular customer’s information was compromised, we will promptly notify them and provide them with additional information so that they can take steps to protect themselves.”Big Y is encouraging customers who have shopped at these locations to review their bank and credit card statements for any signs of fraudulent activity. Customers who have questions or concerns can call Big Y at 1-800-828-2688 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.Card skimmers have also been found in other local grocery store chains in the last few months.In December 2023, Roche Bros. Supermarkets announced that card skimmers were found at self-checkout lanes at the Sudbury Farms stores in Sudbury and Needham, the Brothers Marketplace store in Weston and the Roche Bros. stores in Wellesley and Natick.In addition, the Chelsea Police Department announced in early December 2023 that a card skimmer was found on a register at the city’s Market Basket store on Everett Avenue. Card skimmers had also been found at the Market Basket stores in Reading, Somerville and Haverhill.Police in New Hampshire said that card skimmers were found at Market Basket locations in Concord and Nashua in recent months.
