A neighborhood in Boston costs more per square foot than anywhere else in the US.
Hospitals, museums and schools and colleges dominate the 02115 area of Boston, but the upmarket Back Bay neighborhood is also in the zip code.
And its historic brownstones and upscale apartment blocks with every facility imaginable push up purchase prices – to the point the average price per square foot of $2,663 is the highest in the US, according to Realtor.com.
Miami Beach is second at $2,448 and Snowmass Village in Colorado third at $2,426.
The cheapest is in Gary in Indiana – where typical property sells for $39,000 – at just $18 per square foot.
Experts say the price variations are simply down to supply and demand pushing prices up or down. How remote an area is plays a part too, since where land is plentiful houses tend to be bigger.

The 61 story tower opened in 2019 and has a Four Seasons hotel with 158 private residences.
The propeerty in the images above is on the market for $6.95million – but for there are just two bedrooms and one bathrooom.
But the corner unit on the 43rd floor has 11-foot windows overlooking the city, harbo and Charles River, plus a double-sided gas fireplace and wine storage.
With the buliding there is also valet parking, a 24/7 concierge, doorman, room service, indoor pool, spa, fitness room, a movie theater, golf simulator and a pet wash area.
Brian Caluori, a real-estate agent with Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty, told the Wall Street Journal that One Dalton had helped push up the average price.
Calouri said: ‘There are insane sales there.
‘There are huge brownstones and single family residences that people are buying up and gutting.
‘These are multimillion-dollar properties with high down payments. If something is in good condition, you’ll see bidding wars and the property going over asking.’
NEWBURY STREET – $7.5 million
The penthouse corner unit has 20 foot ceilings and – thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows – also has stunning views over the city and the Charles River.
The bulding was built in 1918 but appartments like this have been fully renovated, and this one has a state-of-the art kitchen.
