1906 ‘White House’ on Albany’s historic home tour is for sale at $875,000

The Historic Interior Home Tour in Albany on July 29 opens the door to six significant residences, including the 1906 Cathey House, designed in the Georgian Revival-style with a dramatic two-story front portico.

Known as “The White House,” the Cathey House sits prominently in the Monteith District at 730 Washington St S.W. and is listed for sale at $875,000.

More than 117 years ago, Alexander Charles (A.C.) Ewart, a successful architect in Oregon and British Columbia, was hired to create a classic residence for John H. Simpson, who was married to Margaret L Monteith Simpson. Her uncles, pioneers Thomas and Walter Monteith, platted Albany and made it a major shipping point in the 1850s. The Cathey House, however, is named after John and Margaret’s daughter, Merle Simpson-Cathey, who lived there with her salesman spouse Cecil Cathey.

The craftsmanship of the Cathey House would be hard to duplicate. There are inlaid wood floors and original light fixtures, says listing broker Kelly Dehaan of Cadwell Realty Group-Corvallis. “This is one of my favorite homes. All of the previous owners have been amazing stewards of this home, and it truly shows throughout.”

The 4,642-square-foot house has box-beam ceilings and a dining room with built-in china cabinets. There are two fireplaces in the formal rooms on the main level and five bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen has period-looking black appliances with nickel trim, and the butler’s pantry has the kitchen’s white cupboards with nickel pulls.

The house shares the 0.2-acre lot with mature trees, hedges and lawns.

The Monteith District is one of four national historic districts in the city that claims the most varied collection of architectural styles in the state, according to the Albany Visitors Association. There are more than 800 historic buildings dating from the 1840s to the 1940s within 100 square blocks.

The Historic Interior Home Tour in Albany is 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 29. Tickets are $15 in advance at monteithhouse.org. The event is a fundraiser for the 1849 Monteith House Museum, the restored residence of Thomas and Walter Monteith. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house museum is open to the public.

This is the 44th consecutive year the home tour has been held, according to Kim Jackson of the Albany Visitors Association. For more information, visit albanyvisitors.com or call 541-928-0911.

This year, six homes as well as the Monteith House Museum, Albany Regional Museum and St. Mary’s Church Museum are on the tour. People can also look inside the Queen Anne-style, 1892 Cumberland Church during its renovation.

To receive a copy of the tour map and wristband, bring your e-ticket to the Albany Visitors Association office, 110 Third Ave. S.E., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. July 29. Limited in-person sales also will be available there on tour day (cash or check only).

Refreshments will be served at the Albany Regional Museum, 136 Lyon Street S.W. The Albany Vintage Trolley and a horse-drawn wagon also will be available for visitors to ride.
