Weld County oil spills for Dec. 20 – Greeley Tribune


The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.

Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual “spills” do occur among the 17,000-plus wells in the county.

» PDC ENERGY INC reported Dec. 16 a historical well spill near Weld County roads 74 and 35 in Eaton. An unknown amount of production fluid spilled. The historic release was found during abandonment at the wellhead.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Dec. 15 a historical well spill near Weld 57 and 44, about 20 miles south of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned wellhead. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for 1-methylnaphthalene, soil adsorption ratio and petroleum hydrocarbons.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Dec. 15 a historical flowline spill near Weld 56 and 55, about 2 miles northeast of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned flowline. Two soil samples exceeded COGCC standards for acenaphthene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, fluorine, pyrene, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2- methylnaphthalene.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Dec. 13 a historical flowline spill near Weld 47 1/2 and 34 1/2, about 15 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned flowline. Three soil samples exceeded COGCC standards for benzo(a)anthracene, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Dec. 9 a recent well spill near U.S. 85 and Colo. 66 in Platteville. An unknown amount of thermogenic gas spilled. A voluntary water sample was collected from a water well and submitted for analysis. Results indicated the presence of stray thermogenic gas in the water.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Dec. 6 a historical flowline spill near Weld 33 and 32, about 3 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following flowline removal operations. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Dec. 6 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 39 and 28, about 9 miles southeast of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following facility decommissioning. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.

» CIVITAS NORTH LLC reported Dec. 6 a recent spill near Colo. 14 and Weld 390, about 3 miles south of Keota. An unknown amount of oil and produced water spilled. Produced fluids were found daylighting from the flowline during a routine inspection. The well was shut in. The flowline was evacuated of fluids and locked out of service. The removal of impacted soil will occur following the flowline’s exposure and clearance of utility locations. Crews will dispose impacted soil and collect confirmation soil samples for analysis.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Dec. 5 a historical tank battery spill Weld 39 and 38, about 9 miles northeast of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following decommissioning. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.
