Which parts of Mass. can expect power outages during Tuesday’s nor’easter?

Southeastern Massachusetts could experience power outages during Tuesday’s nor’easter as a result of strong wind gusts, and those in this area should avoid traveling during the storm, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service has issued a high wind warning for the Cape and Islands from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, as 25 to 35 mph winds with gusts up to 60 mph are expected there during this time. Southeast Plymouth County could also experience high winds, which should peak between 1 and 7 p.m., weather service forecaster Alan Dunham said.

Trees and power lines may be knocked down as a result of the winds, and electrical outages are possible, according to the weather service. Travel may be difficult, especially for tall vehicles, and anyone who drives during this time should do so cautiously.

“People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows,” the weather service wrote in its warning.

The weather service also issued a gale warning for coastal waters east of Ipswich Bay, Massachusetts Bay and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday. It predicts north winds of 20 to 30 knots with gusts up to 45 knots and waves of 9 to 14 feet.

“Strong winds will cause hazardous waves, which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” it wrote in the warning. “Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions.”

The nor’easter is expected to reach Massachusetts early Tuesday morning and dump 12 to 18 inches in the Boston and Worcester areas and 8 to 12 inches in most of the rest of the state. Flooding may also be an issue along the Greater Boston coast, South Shore, South Coast, Cape and Islands as a result of rapid snowfall.

The storm is expected to dump more snow on Boston than it has received in a single storm in more than two years.
