In a town dotted with Craftsman and other more traditional homes, this modern home for sale in Mountain Lakes stands out.
The 5,000-square-foot home was designed by architect Jay Almour. It spans three levels and has six bedrooms, four full bathrooms and one half bathroom, a finished walk-out basement, a sunroom and a three-car garage. It’s listed for sale at $2 million.
The median sales price of a home in Mountain Lakes was $965,000 in November, according to the most recent data available from New Jersey Realtors.
“This town is known for its historic homes,” said Sueanne Sylvester, the listing agent from Coldwell Banker Realty, who grew up in and still lives in Mountain Lakes. “There are very few contemporary style homes and not very many homes that were built after 1990 that have this kind of character.”
The home is considered Art Moderne style, also known as Streamline Moderne. It’s a style of Art Deco that is inspired by aerodynamic curves, horizontal lines and sometimes nautical elements. It was used since the 1930s largely in industrial design for things like railroad cars, buses and appliances.
Almour designed two other houses in Mountain Lakes and one in Boonton that are similar.
“It’s a spacious contemporary that has so much innovative design and architecture,” Sylvester said. “The curves and the angles and the lighting, ceiling heights and windows are all just gorgeous.”
The first level has an open floor plan with 11-foot ceilings, a stone fireplace, a contemporary kitchen with curved cabinets, a four-season porch, a den and the primary suite.
There is a curved deck along the back of the house off the main level with railings similar to those on a grand ocean liner. The view from the deck is of the wooded nearly 1 acre property.
A rounded staircase leads to second floor where there are four bedrooms and two full bathrooms.
The basement has another bedroom, a full bathroom, a gym, a recreation room, a three-sided gas fireplace and a bar.
The buyer for the home will likely be someone who has an eye for art.
“Somebody who appreciates art, who collects art perhaps and understands architecture,” Sylvester said.
It could also be someone who is looking for a multi-generational house, she said, because the third floor just needs a stove to make it an independent living space.
