Cyber fraud: Lured by profit in Forex trading, Khar bizman loses Rs 1.56 cr to conmen | Mumbai News

A 56-year-old transport businessman from Khar was duped of Rs 1.56 crore after a group of three people befriended him on social media, and lured him into investing money in foreign exchange trading and cheated him. Dongri police on Friday lodged an FIR in the matter.

The complainant, a Khar West resident, received messages from an unknown WhatsApp number in September this year.

“The woman who sent the message assured the complainant a 10 to 15 per cent profit if he invested in foreign exchange trading through her group Star Banner,” the police complaint states.

The accused person with the help of other associates convinced the complainant to invest as per their advice to make profits. When he agreed, he was asked to deposit money in certain bank accounts. Initially, they gave him small profits to win his trust and encouraged him to invest big, a police officer said.

By the second week of this month, the complainant had invested Rs 1.56 crore. However, when he asked them about the profit, they began avoiding him and cut off all communication, which made him realise that he had been conned by them, the police said. He then approached the police and filed a complaint.

On his complaint, the Dongri police registered a case against three unidentified individuals under sections 419, 420, 34 of the Indian Penal Code and 66 (B)(C) of the Information Technology Act.

Police are in process of gathering details of the phone numbers, Instagram account and beneficiary bank accounts used by the accused.
