Sowela Technical Community College’s 2023 surgical technology class recently earned a 100% pass rate on their Certified Surgical Technologist exam. The 175-question test from the accredited National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting assesses individuals’ mastery of a broad range of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique and patient care. SOWELA graduates surpassed the national pass rate average of 73.7% and are now certified Surgical Technologists.

“We congratulate our graduates whose hard work and dedication in the program paid off,” said Sowela Surgical Technology Program Director Amy Broussard. “Having all the graduates pass the National Certification Examination and earn their credentials through the NBSTSA is strong evidence of our curriculum’s quality and the faculty’s knowledge and dedication. The CST certification is the gold standard in the profession, and having a 100% pass rate speaks to the quality of the Surgical Technology program at Sowela.”

Sowela surgical technology graduates that passed include Scarlett Ange, Adriana Baldwin, Macy Beller, Laura Mae Dugas, Gracie Fournet, Katie Gary, Carley Heller, Colleen Johnson and Caitlin Ross.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for surgical technology assistants is expected to increase by a faster-than-average 7%, with the addition of 7,600 jobs by 2029. According to the same statistics, the median wage for those in the surgical technology field in Louisiana is $45,000. Currently, surgical technology positions make up nearly 2,000 jobs in Louisiana.

The Surgical Technology program located at Sowela’s Morgan Smith site in Jennings, Louisiana provides individuals with high-quality didactic, simulation and clinical learning opportunities to meet the needs of local healthcare partners. Students earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and acquire the skills needed to enter the workforce as entry-level Surgical Technologists on the surgical team.
