Boston tunnel closure causing backups into Logan Airport

Officials expect traffic leaving Boston’s Logan Airport to experience more disruptions in the days and weeks ahead amid the closure of the Sumner Tunnel into the city.”Last week was kind of not a true test of what we are expecting for the next seven weeks because a lot of people were on vacation last week,” said Ed Freni, the director of aviation for Massport. Drivers heading from Logan Airport into Boston are now forced to use the Ted Williams Tunnel, which experiences backups and delays even when both tunnels are open. “We’re seeing the traffic back up,” Freni said. “We’re in it right now where the Ted Williams Tunnel is backed up into the airport.”At points on Monday, traffic delays were getting so long that it was creating congestion inside airport roadways, something Massport and state police are looking to avoid. “We’re going to have to start diverting traffic off and on until we can release the congestion that’s backing up into the terminal,” Freni said. “We’re seeing it more than we saw it last week.”Freni says in order for the airport to clear out traffic on roadways so that people can get in and out of the terminals, they temporarily block access from the airport to the tunnel entrance ramp. “We close the entrance to the Ted Williams that are on the airport property and divert that traffic up north so that we can release the traffic around the terminals to make it safe and so that people can gain access,” Freni said. “Sometimes it takes 15, 20 minutes, and then we’ll allow the traffic flow to go back into the Ted Williams,” Freni said. Freni says Monday has been the worst delays they’ve seen at the airport since the shutdown of the Sumner Tunnel. “We had seen traffic like this on Sundays,” Freni said. “The traffic is heavier today, but may have something to do with the weather as well.”Freni suggests travelers pack their patience and allow extra travel time.”We’re recommending 2 hours because we think, at some point, people are going to get stuck that long trying to get here or getting out of here,” Freni said.
