New wind turbine plant bringing jobs to Sparrows Point

A new plant that will build wind turbine foundations and other components will open in Sparrows Point. It’s part of Orsted’s shore-to-shore supply chain operation in Maryland. The facility will employ 125 union construction workers and offer 20 professional staff jobs. Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, characterized the site as hallowed ground. The foundation where Maryland becomes the offshore wind capital of America. “The ability to see something before other people do. The ability to invest in something before other people are prepared. An ability to see what the future looks like before other people have a chance to see for themselves,” Moore said. Moore expressed his vision of a cleaner, greener future for Maryland as he participated in a ceremonial ground-breaking for a new manufacturing plant at Tradepoint Atlantic. Orsted, a wind turbine company, is building a facility that will make components to be used on turbines across the country.”Here at Tradepoint Atlantic, workers will assemble the internal platforms that will house wires and sensors and allow technicians to access the turbine for maintenance. The facility here will also fabricate the external platforms where that transfer at sea of personnel and equipment can now safely take place even in inclement weather,” said David Hardy, group EVP and CEO of the Americas at Orsted.Tradepoint Atlantic represents a turnaround for Sparrows Point, the site of the former Bethlehem Steel mill. The area provides logistical advantages. “The combination of deep-water access, robust infrastructure, rail connectivity and abundant real estate makes trade point a perfect fit for offshore wind,” said Kerry Doyle, managing director at Tradepoint Atlantic.”This facility will also make Sparrows Point, Baltimore County and the state of Maryland even more intracule in offshore wind projects up and down the east coast,” said Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, a Democrat. The plant will employ 20 staff, and construction alone will create 125 union jobs. “That are going to provide health care, a living wage and retirement security,” said Jermaine Jones, the director for Baltimore/D.C. Building Trades.Moore also signed three bills at the ground-breaking event solidifying Maryland’s clean energy future. The legislation quadruples the state’s offshore wind energy goal to 8.5 gigawatts by 2031. Another reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and he signed a measure providing rebates to businesses that purchase electric vehicles. “(These bills) are going to help us to accelerate Maryland’s transition from a state powered by oil and gas to a state powered by clean energy,” Moore said. The three bills the governor signed help to solidify the state’s commitment to achieving a clean energy future.
